Color in flow : Crafting and Blending Gloop Glaze

In this workshop, we explore color as a living material : sculptural, fluid and in motion.

Participants will learn how to prepare colored gloop glaze from powder, understand its chemical foundations, and develop their own color blends through controlled experimentation.

Before entering the mixing process, we will briefly discuss the difference between traditional glaze formulation and effect-based glazes such as "gloop".

Traditional glaze research often focuses on balance, stability, surface control and precise chemical ratios.

Gloop, on the other hand, embraces thickness, movement, gravity and layering.
It is less about flat uniform coverage, and more about texture, flow and controlled unpredictability.

Understanding this distinction allows us to approach the material with the right mindset.

We will then move through each phase of the process:

• Scaling and mixing the base glaze materials with pigments
• Hydrating and adjusting consistency
• Understanding viscosity and flow
• Preparing gloop for application, working with plaster and syringe

Special focus will be placed on:

• Oxides and pigments : how minerals create color
• How to mix 2 pigments to create personal shades
• Volumetric blending and basic color testing
• Understanding how firing transforms raw minerals

Each participant will create test tiles and develop personal color blends.

At the end of the workshop, all colors will be shared, allowing everyone to work with the collective palette which then be glazed on an porcelain incense holder from Donoma ware.

This workshop combines chemistry, intuition, and control. It is all about allowing color to move, settle, and flow with intention.

Workshop guidelines : 

• Introduction of traditional glazes and effect glazes
• Theoretical understanding of oxides pigment
• Handling and blending materials for gloop glazes
• Masks and hand-gloves will be provided
• You can choose 2 base colors from 8 pigments to blend in your own ratio 

After the workshop :

• We will glaze-fire after drying
• Be fired at high temperature

Color in Flow：グループ（Gloop）釉薬の制作とブレンド

本ワークショップでは、色を「生きた素材」として捉え、彫刻的で流動的、そして動きをもつ存在として探求します。

参加者は、粉末原料から色付きグループ釉薬を調合する方法を学び、その化学的基礎を理解しながら、コントロールされた実験を通して独自の色のブレンドを開発します。

調合に入る前に、伝統的な釉薬配合と、「グループ」のような効果系釉薬との違いについて簡単に解説します。グループとは昨今世界的に人気となっている垂れそうで垂れないドロドロとした釉薬のことを指します。

従来の釉薬研究が、バランスや安定性、表面のコントロール、正確な化学比率に重きを置くのに対し、
グループは厚み、動き、重力、レイヤーを受け入れる素材です。
均一な被膜をつくることよりも、質感や流れ、そして意図された不確定性に焦点を当てます。

この違いを理解することで、適切な視点で素材に向き合うことができます。

制作プロセス：
・基礎グループ釉薬の計量と顔料の混合
・加水と粘度調整
・粘性と流動性の理解
・石膏やシリンジスポイトを用いた施釉

特に重視するポイント：
・酸化合物・顔料：鉱物がどのように色を生み出すか
・2種類の顔料を組み合わせた独自の色の配合
・体積比によるブレンドと基本的な色テスト方法
・焼成による鉱物の変化の理解

各参加者はテストタイルを制作し、個人のカラーブレンドを開発します。

ワークショップの最後には、完成したすべての色を共有し、
ドノマ・ウェアの磁器製インセンスホルダーに、
コレクティブなパレットとして施釉を行います。

本ワークショップは、化学、直感、そして溶融のコントロールを融合させた内容です。
色が動き、留まり、流れることを、体感的に学ぶ時間となります。

・グループ釉薬の調合および取り扱い
・マスクおよび手袋は貸与
・8色の顔料から2色を選び、自由な比率でブレンド可能

ワークショップ後の工程：
・乾燥後、施釉焼成
・高温焼成
