Introduction to Kintsugi: Repairing Ceramics with Urushi Lacquer

Urushi lacquer is a traditional Japanese craft made from the natural sap of the urushi tree. Known for its exceptional durability and adhesive properties, urushi has been used for centuries to protect and enhance wooden objects, as well as to repair broken ceramics.

For pottery lovers, we are delighted to offer a series of introductory workshops exploring the art of urushi lacquer and Kintsugi, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery with lacquer. Through this hands-on experience, you will discover the beauty of wabi-sabi and learn how to give new life to cherished ceramic pieces.

About the instructor: Tzofiya, Tiqun Studio Project

Tzofiya has been studying and working within the traditional craft field in Kyoto for over two years, with a focus on kintsugi mending. Through repairing friends’ beloved objects, she developed an appreciation for how kintsugi can create meaningful connections to the natural world and one another. By sharing the stories and methods of traditional materials, she hopes to support their continuation and renewal.

Aim for the workshop

In this workshop, we will learn how to mend simple breaks and small chips in ceramic items. Participants will learn how to work with urushi, Japanese lacquer, which is a versatile natural resin. Each participants will receive a kintsugi kit and learn how to use traditional tools and materials to mend one broken item. This course is a first step in learning how to mend ceramic pieces, and is designed to create a foundation for further home practice or formal study.

Allergic Reaction

Please note that for most people, urushi in its uncured state causes contact dermatitis if it comes in contact with uncovered skin. Once urushi is cured, it is a nontoxic and safe material. We will learn about and practice safe handling of raw urushi, including wearing gloves. However, this course is not suitable for people with related medical concerns.

Finishing Types

Although kintsugi mending is often known for its gold finish, this workshop will focus on the multi-step process of using natural materials to bring the item back together.

Participants will be given the choice to finish their piece with lacquer in a deep brown or red, or with a metallic powder. Brass and silver powder is included in the kit and is a suitable way to practice handling precious metal powders and create a beautiful finish. If they wish, participants can also purchase gold powder to use within the course to finish their piece.
